How to Sound like a Total Geek

I was having coffee with someone and we'd finished with business and were on to more important stuff, like talking about our kids.

"Tonight is family math night." I say, then realize how totally geeky that just sounded, and quickly add, "I mean at school, it's a school function."

To which she, who has a PhD and gets off on editing technical papers, still laughs and claims it's too geeky for her (probably weren't her exact words :).

I accept and relish my son's current obsession with math. And I'm glad he's finally getting into the $12 laptop (on sale at Mervyn's) I bought about 2 years ago in the hope it would satisfy his need to type on mommy's computer (it didn't). Of course he was too tired to enjoy math night. Should I worry that the younger brother is already "hitting on" his older brother's "girlfriend?" (they are4, 5 and 6, respectively). They played a really fun game that requires very little material.

One bowl

Handful of change

A die marked with 1cent, 5cents, 10cents, 25cents and collect

You take turns rolling the die and put the amount you roll in the bowl. If you hit "collect" you take the money out of the bowl, and the first person to reach a dollar wins. Teaches about money and counting by 1s, 5s, 10s, etc. Enjoy, my fellow math geeks.

The photo has nothing to do with this post, but we (okay I) were so proud of ourselves for putting together this masterpiece. Thanks again to Mir for pointing out a great deal on this set (I got it when it was $8). No thanks for sucking me into a megablok set that requires swearing by parents to put together, totally falls apart if you look at it funny, or sit a four year old next to it. I know, she did say they were for older kids.

  2. Great money game! I can use it next fall when I'm teaching our money unit. You'd be surprised at how many 4th graders still have trouble counting money and making change.
