Oh yes, I sure understand the kid who tries to get out of things. Lol! Both my older kids pull the "my belly hurts" deal at meals instead of just saying they don't like it or that they are full. I think you have a good balance going Of sympathy but not letting him totally get out of everything. And I love the own desk thing at school. My 8 year old son benefits a lot by being moved on his own instead of grouped with other kids. Thanks for sharing!

My mom has some of that in her as well. She was making me pita pockets with sprouts and avocado for lunch when I was in junior high and introduced many of my friends to things like mango and papaya. She always wanted us to try new things and I'm thankful for it. Now I'm an adventurous - and healthy - eater. No doubt due to her efforts.

Pretentious hippie food - ha! I still retain an absolute hatred of CAROB due entirely to MY years of being raised doing pretentious hippie food. You know, where if you wanted something sweet, you could have a cup of Sleepytime herbal tea -- with honey! Ack. Might explain my adoration of Diet Coke when I hit adulthood!

On the other hand, carob powder is absolutely lovely when you add it (with sunflower seeds) to homemade wheat bread. :-) (yes, it rubbed off on me also!)

What a fantastic family house. Lucky you! I would love to have a place like this for my whole family. The closest thing we have is in West Virginia where my mother is from. There's the family cemetery, which dates back to the 1700's, and the old farm house my great grandparents lived in that is now occupied by a 3rd cousin. In any case, it holds a lot of memories and my extended family goes every year to visit. I hope to join them soon.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the book and that it inspired this lovely family place and time for you. As for the metaphors and similies, I know. I'm a bit of a southern writer and that just seems to come with the territory.

What a wonderful old house and great family pictures! I love to stay in places like that but I could never do the "breakfast" part of the b & b thing.

I am not sure where you are from but in Cape May, NJ, if you own a house down there you are pretty much forced to turn it into a B & B in order to keep it, the upkeep is just that expensive! Especially being on the shore where the salt air peels your paint every two to three years and you are forced to completely redo the exterior!

If you ever have the chance to go there, I would highly recommend this town an all of it's Victorian treasures!

I am also concerned at the amount of testing that goes on in schools now. They are so concerned with getting their test scores up that they barely have time to learn anything wonderful and exciting! I don't think my fifth grader will read any novels as part of the curriculum this year--just excerpts in her "anthology."

It's difficult when your child doesn't like school. I had one that love it and excelled and one that hated it and it was a struggle every single day! I wish I had the answer but all I could do was just make sure and stay on top of the one that hated it to make sure he finished his assignments and stayed on task.

As a mother of a child with Tourette's, OCD, Anxiety and more, I too worry about how my kindergartner will fair in our public education system. If I had the money, my child would not be going to public school.

On Back to School night I was speaking with the art teacher about how hard and awkward it is for me to call teachers "Mrs." and "Miss". She told me at Montessori the children address the teachers by their first name. That right there says something very different about how those children will be educated.
